Designing a Fintech Platform for Credit, Assets & Operations

Overview

As the sole product designer, I led product design from the ground up for Gigmile’s mobility fintech platform, spanning a user-facing mobile app and internal admin systems to support growth, operations, and asset oversight.

The Background

Gig and informal workers power Africa’s cities; riders, delivery captains, and drivers, yet they’re largely excluded from traditional financial systems.

At Gigmile, the mission was to change that through Gamma mobility:
an all-in-one platform that enables mobility entrepreneurs to:

  1. Work and earn

  1. Access productive assets (Cars, motorcycles, phones)

  1. Request working capital (fuel, repairs, salary advances)

  1. Track repayments and build credit history over time

The Challenge

This wasn’t just a user-facing app. It was a two-sided system that had to scale across:

  1. Captains in the field

  1. Operations teams

  1. Credit risk, repayments, and asset inventory

And I was designing both sides.

My Responsibility

As the sole designer, I owned:

  1. Consumer mobile app UX (onboarding → credit → repayments)

  1. Admin & operations platform (approvals, risk, assets, repayments)

  1. UX research across a highly constrained user group

  1. System thinking across finance, logistics, and human behavior

Understanding the Gig Economy

Research to Design Leverage. I focused on understanding how gig workers actually think about money. What research revealed:

  1. Income is daily, not monthly

  1. Financial decisions are situational, not planned

  1. Trust is earned through clarity, not features

  1. Users fear hidden deductions more than interest rates

  1. Admin teams need summaries, early warning signals, not raw data

Success meant balancing simplicity for captains with control and visibility for operations; without slowing either side down.

Designing the Captain Experience (Mobile App)

Onboarding & Account Setup

Goal: Get captains earning fast without overwhelming them.

Before touching flows or UI, I spent time playing EverMerge deeply. Not skimming. Actually playing. I needed to understand:

  1. Broke onboarding into small, digestible steps

  1. Clear value proposition upfront: work, earn, access assets

  1. Clear value proposition upfront: work, earn, access assets

  1. Progress indicators to reduce drop-off

Identity verification integrated seamlessly: Document upload, Selfie verification and Minimal cognitive load

Asset Financing

Captains could request motorcycles, tricycles and smartphones.

  1. Asset selection (type, condition, usage intent)

  1. Credit eligibility check with established criteria (behind the scenes)

  1. Credit eligibility check with established criteria (behind the scenes)

  1. Clear breakdown of: Asset value, Repayment terms, Expected obligations

  1. Acceptance of terms and agreement

Tracking Requests & Assets

Tracking Requests & Assets

After a request is approved, the real journey begins. I designed clear tracking views that let captains see what they’ve requested, what’s active, and how repayments are progressing so nothing feels hidden or confusing.

Designing for Operations (Admin Dashboard)

Designing for Operations (Admin Dashboard)

The Core Question

This was where complexity lived and where bad UX could cost real money.

How do you give operations teams control, speed, and clarity; without drowning them in data?

Admin Users & Jobs-to-be-Done

Through interviews with operations staff and leadership, I mapped key admin needs:

  1. Monitor asset inventory (in stock vs in field)

  1. Approve or decline credit requests

  1. Approve or decline credit requests

  1. Track repayments and defaults

  1. Manage Captains, requests and service partners

  1. Detect risk before default happens

Dashboard Overview

A single source of truth: Active captains, Pending requests, Upcoming repayments, Asset distribution, Geographic activity and Live activity timeline

Admins could immediately spot what needed attention today.

Asset & Working Capital Management

This covers:

  1. Request states (pending, active, completed, declined)

  1. Total value deployed vs recovered

  1. Revenue data managed by account managers, overseeing the platform's portfolio and overall repayemnts

The level of information shown to an admin depends on the specific role, and the metrics were strictly informed by the details the specific admin role tracks in day-to-day operations during fields surveys.

Asset Metrics & Inventory

Clear visibility into assets in stock and in the field, helping teams track usage, health, and deployment at a glance.

Credit Scoring & Account Management

Admins can set the criteria of the dynamic scoring based on current operations and economic stats without engineering bottleneck.

Partner Platforms

Display and management views that help operations monitor partner platfroms captains are deployed on

Roles & Permissions

Role-based access ensures each admin sees only what they need, reducing risk while keeping operations fast and secure.

Broadcast Messaging

A simple way for admins to communicate updates to captains at scale using targeted messages and reusable templates.

Major Takeaways

This project strengthened my systems thinking across consumer and operations design, showing how decisions on one side directly affect risk, repayments, and day-to-day operations.

It reinforced that trust in fintech comes from clarity. When users understand status, obligations, and progress, engagement improves.

Designing for operations sharpened my attention to detail, especially around roles, permissions, and data visibility, where small choices have outsized impact.

CEO

"Choice really made everything come together for us. She deeply understood our riders' world and the ops realities, kept the designs clean and practical, caught important details early, and helped us get to launch much faster without ever compromising on quality or user trust."

Samuel Esiri

COO

"Choice nailed it right from the beginning. She perfectly balanced what the captains need in a super simple mobile app with everything we require on the backend to manage credit risk, repayments, and asset tracking, and her thoughtful approach made scaling the whole platform feel manageable and way less chaotic."

Temidayo

Head of Ops

"Working with Choice felt easy and productive. She actually listened to the real pain points we deal with every day in Lagos ops, picked up on the small field-level details most people miss, and built us a dashboard that gives clear, actionable info so we can respond quickly instead of getting buried in noise."

David Adegoke

Lead Engineer

"Choice was excellent to work with as the designer. She communicated her reasoning super clearly, always stayed mindful of our realities, flagged potential edge cases very early (especially around repayment logic), and made the whole handoff to dev clean, reducing surprises during implementation"
